Misuzu Photography: The Start

Hello and Happy Monday!

This week I want to share some of my first ever photographs with you. I got my first DSLR camera in 2012 when I was on holiday with my family in Dubai shortly after my 21st birthday. Prior to going, I had asked my dad if I could borrow one of his cameras for the holiday and he had said no, which I thought was really mean. The first thing he did when we got there was take me to the mall and buy me my own camera as that's what he had wanted to get me for my birthday. And that's when I got my Nikon D5100.

I was obviously over the moon with it, but I had no idea what I was doing so I spent the holiday figuring it out and taking loads of photos. I thought it would be cool to go back and take a look at the start of my photography journey and share some of those first images I took. These never got edited because I hadn't learnt to do that yet, but here are some of the photos from Summer 2012 when I first got my big girl camera!

Sun

So obviously being in Dubai, it's gonna be sunny. I managed to get some creative shots of the sun in the city:

And some really really wonderful shots of the sun in the desert:

Dubai gave loads of really really pretty sunsets, and I tried my best to capture them!

City

I found Dubai a really fascinating place to be and it is perfect for photography because all of the buildings are incredibly pretty, even the metro system looked lovely! Here are a few of my favourite images:

Abstract City

When I was looking back through my images, it was quite good to see that even when I first got my camera that I enjoyed taking close up images, using a close crop to get a more abstract images from parts of the architecture, and playing with the light and shadow.

And here is me playing with a weird viewpoint and a shallow depth of field, which is definitely something that I still do in my photography now!

From the Top

We went to the top of Burj Khalifa of course... Here are the images I got from up there where everything looked so far away it looked like a toy town. I mostly took photos to distract myself from the fact that I was way too high up because I wasn't really a fan of that.

Sand

There's a lot of sand in Dubai, I preferred the dunes to the beaches but most of the images I got of the dunes were blurry as I was trying to take photos while we were driving over the dunes!

Animals

I got some lovely images from the aquarium we went to. I think the puffer fish was my favourite... they're just so cute!

And there were other animals there too:

This guy was just completely adorable:

Of course camels, and the birds while out and about too:

Plants

I definitely still take images like this now, focussing on the texture of things like bark, and photographing flowers close up!

Abstract

And of course, the weird images... it's good to know that I've always been taking weird photos. The first image came about with me getting my settings wildly wrong trying to shoot at night, but then realising I could mess about with that and get something weird. I think this was the fourth or fifth attempt and I actually like it as an image.

The second one was playing with a laser pointer in the hotel room... I did try to do one writing my name but it wasn't legible at all.

And to finish, here is a 21 year old me enjoying the sunset in the middle of the desert :)

And that's all from me for today! Thanks for reading and I'll look forward to sharing more with you next Monday <3

Lovely. My second Nikon was a D5100 (still got it as well, its the one Ben uses). And its nice to see your fascination with the Macro world was already developing. You got some excellent images on that trip. I loved taking images in the desert when we went on our dive trips to Egypt :-).

I wish I could claim to have taken as many successful shots with my first camera. Or my first SLR. Or even my first DSLR!

Well done: natural talent showing there.
