Cocoon

Updated: Feb 20

Hello there and Happy Monday! This week it's an abstract art post... if you've been reading my blog for a while then you know I love the weird shots, and if you're new here then... welcome!

Essentially the prop used in these images is like a really big body-sized sock made of the same material as tights. It's super stretchy and sheer so if you get inside it and make wild shapes, with the right lighting you get some wonderful cocoon images. If you book me for a shoot, the chances are I have this with me in my modelling bag, so you can get some shots like this for yourself. It's so much fun to work with and it's something a little different, I definitely recommend giving it a try in your own photography work.

Dave shoots on a Nikon D850, and these shots were all taken at ARB Studio in Longton. It's a lovely studio and if you're interested in working there and booking the studio, you can do so on Instagram or PurplePort. Also the studio owner Amy is a talented photographer, and you can check out her work here.

All of these images were taken by Dave and edited by me.

Seated

Usually when we shoot this, we tend to do most of the shots standing so this time, we had fun exploring some seated poses. This particular 'big sock' is way stretchier and more sheer than the one we used to use so you can get even more creative with the posing. Also, the light comes through it more, which gives a softer effect that I'm quite into. I think the seated poses lend themselves to the 'cocoon' theme a lot more than the standing poses do.

Standing: Monochrome

I quite like the effect of converting these to black and white as I think it shows off the lighting a lot better. These three work well together as a tryptic too, especially as they get a little lighter as you move from left to right.

Standing: Colour

In these colour versions, I edited the first one to be really light and the second one to be darker with a pinkish tinge to it. I love images with the studio lighting in the frame too, so I chose to keep that in on the second one.

And the final image: I just love the shape of the body here, it's super abstract and just very Misuzu.
