A Year Ago in Wolverhampton
Hi there and Happy Monday!
Today I am bringing you some images that were taken last September in a studio in Wolverhampton called Asylum. I have did a blog featuring some images taken by Dave Edkins from this shoot, but I completely forgot to come back and post some from the other photographer who was there: John Duder! I'm gonna blame this on being too excited about Halloween and Christmas shoots at the time.
Anyway it's quite interesting to compare the images taken by different photographers when they share a shoot. Everyone has a different vision for their images, so they will see quite different potential in a space. Especially on this shoot as Asylum studio was quite small so we had to get creative with how we chose to use it. A small space to shoot isn't always a bad thing... it's quite fun to have to think a little more about how you use a space.
Anyway, I will show you some images in a minute but just to let you know that the photographer who shot these a year ago is called John Duder. You can find him on PurplePort and Instagram to check out more of his work.
Portraits
First up are some portraits! These were from the first set we did when we got to the studio. They came out really nicely and I love the texture that the lace on the top adds to the image.
Here are some portraits from towards the end of the shoot where we were using other parts of the studio to explore with different backgrounds. Some images work well on a plain black or white (or any colour) background, but sometimes it's nice to have some more context to an image to make it look less like a model in a studio.
Mirror
The red velvet curtain in the studio was really lovely to shoot in front of and we got some wonderful images there. If you're a regular here, then you may remember some similar images to the ones in the next couple of sections that were in the blog post last year, featuring images from Dave Edkins. You can check those out by clicking here if you missed it or are interested in giving it another read.
Anyway, back to this post. Mirror shots are always a lot of fun to shoot because they're not all that easy to capture. Making sure that both the model and the reflection look good, that the lighting on both model and reflection works, that you as the photographer are not reflected in the image, and that nothing else that looks weird is reflected either... it's tricky! But I really like how these shots turned out.
Red Curtain, White Shirt
Here are some of my favourite shots taken by John in front of the red curtain. First up, here are some wider shots with the white shirt open to give a more fashion nude style image.
Next are some implied nude, portrait style images. I love these closer in shots as they feel a lot more intimate and feminine. Especially when they're shot against the red, because it adds a nice contrast to the white.
Of course, a colour vs black and white shot was needed because this is a Misuzu blog post. I like the monochrome but I do think this shot works better in colour.
Nudes
Finally onto some nudes. There was a cool posing block in the studio that worked really well for some classic art nude images. It looked kind of like the plinth you'd find at the bottom of a statue, so of course some more statuesque poses were required for some nudes.
Here are some colour vs monochrome implied nudes on the posing block. For both of these images, I think I prefer the black and white versions.
BTS
To finish up this post, here are some behind the scenes shots. You rarely get to see what it's like to be on a model shoot and if you're not a model or photographer then you may not know what a model working in a studio looks like. But now you do!

And I can even bring a colour vs monochrome into a BTS section, because I actually really love this shot. Especially as it gives you some perspective on just how small the studio was.
And here we have John Duder shooting me, capturing some of the images you've seen in this post... and then Dave Edkins shooting me, capturing some of the images I posted in the blog post last year!
And that's all from me for today. Thank you for reading and I look forward to sharing more with you next Monday <3

I am very chuffed indeed to have a whole blog post of pictures I took of you. And I am duly ashamed that we haven't been in a studio since (apart from having a cuppa during one of your shoots with Dave)!
Soon!
